If you are a small business owner or freelancer then you know that having a website is crucial to the success of your business. The struggle many entrepreneurs face today is not only how to go about getting a website online, but also choosing a website platform to fit their business needs.
Top Website Platforms Compared
But wait… What about WordPress.org? What’s the difference?
This is where it gets confusing for some. WordPress.com, like Squarespace, allows you to easily create a website using predesigned templates, also known as themes. The user interface on these two platforms allows a novice to quickly build a good looking website. If E-commerce (an online store) is a need of yours, then Squarespace will likely be the better choice.
WordPress.org is, in my opinion, the best solution out of all. The difference is that WordPress.org is an open source version of WordPress.com, allowing you to fully customize your site using the same powerful platform that powers WordPress.com.
With WordPress.org, you are in full control of the look, feel, and functionality of your website; You can even create your own theme from scratch if you so choose.
The disadvantage of WordPress.org is that it’s more difficult to get up and running. If you are a novice, you will likely be pulling our your hair with frustration by the time you figure out how to buy web hosting, install the software, point your domain, and customize your site.
If you are a brand new business and will require a robust, highly customizable website at some point down the road, but not immediately, I would suggest starting with WordPress.com as it would be fairly simple to migrate to WordPress.org when you are ready to do so.
